Looking back at 2018 . . .

What was the best thing about 2018 and why? My best thing about 2018 was going to Mistletoe Bay for school camp because I have never been there before and we did a lot of fun activities and swimming. My favourite activities were Paddle boarding, Archery, raft building and orienteering.

Something you are proud of that you have done in 2018 and why? I am proud of myself because I went to the trials for the under 13 West Coast basketball team thinking that I wouldn't get in, and in the end I got into the team. I had alot of fun going on all of the trips and I made a lot more friends.

My goals for 2019,
I want to improve my stanine for maths and read over 10 chapter books in the holidays to keep my stanine high in reading. I also want to put my hand up for more things at school like Office, Road patrol and librarian.

Descriptive writing on an image

For writing this week we had to write a descriptive piece of writing about an image. Here is my writing below.
A dull mist nipped my tongue as I was pulled blindly into the dark forest by her. Her quiet voice tempting me to go further.

A bright light pierced through the trees into my eyes blurring my vision. As my eyes adjusted the blurr started to clear. The bare branches spiked into the sky, and a black shadowy figure stood a few meters in front of me. Blood red roses started to darken the woods as I walk further down the unknown pathway.

Cold water splashed up against my calves, leaking through my shoes as I start to pace cautiously through the icy creek. The nerves in my stomach are telling me to run but my curiosity forces me to stay, stay in the chilling creek, stalling my numb toes.

The air is toxic, damp leaves and dead birds mixed with the sweet scent of flora covering the forest floor. The expired metallic water in my bottle slips down my throat making me want to gag. A cold breeze is screaming into my ears. The harder I try to keep my feet quiet the more noise I seem to make, stepping on dried twigs and kicking stones. I venture further and further into the unknown and the forest closes behind me. As I peer ahead of me the mysterious figure in front of me vanishes leaving me, alone, in the murky darkness . . .

T3 2018 Art soiree - Tie dye T-Shirts

For the past week T2 have been designing and creating Tie dye T-shirts for this years Art soiree. Here is my shirt, my design was the spiral but it didn't work out as planned but I still like it. To make it we had to put it under the tap, and rinse out the water so it is damp. Then we had to twist out t-shirt and tie it up with rubber bands. After that it was time to tie dye, we put the shirt in the sink put our gloves on and started to carefully squirt the dye on. when we had finished we put it is a plastic bag for 6 - 8 hours. The next day Miss Hines took out the t-shirts and rinsed out the exes dye so that when we wash it - it won't stain other clothes.when she had rinsed them we hung them up for a day or 2 until it was dry.Now that we had finished making them it was time to hang them up in the hall ready for the Art soiree tonight. If you like our shirts come along to the Grey Main hall at 7.00 tonight to put a bid on our shirts and obsereve the other pieces of art.

The Life of a Chinese immigrants when they lived of the west coast

Life as a chinese immigrant in the 1860s,

Last week my class went on a trip to shantytown, and learnt about the Chinese immigrants when they lived on the West Coast mining gold.

The Chinese men came to NZ - the West Coast to mine for gold, to get money for their poor villages back in China. Lots of the time the Chinese elders said that they had received letters saying that you have now got a wife and you have to make sure that you find and collect more gold to look after her. If you didn’t get much after that the elders would say that you now have a baby and you have to find even more gold to make sure they have enough money for a house and food.

The Europeans hated the Chinese and didn’t treat them very well. The Europeans found it funny when they stoned them by throwing rocks at them. The Chinese believed in this religious saying that if you have a long plait you will go to heaven and if you don’t you will go to hell. Because of that the Europeans snuck up behind the Chinese, grabbed their plait and chopped it off!

The Europeans were so desperate to find gold that they raced through the rivers so fast that they missed half of the gold. But the Chinese went slow and found most of the gold that had been left behind by the Europeans.

The Chinese didn’t live in a very good environment because they had to live in a old cold cave in the dark. On the good side someone would go to the closest town or village and buy some necessities like food and candles.

In the end the Chinese didn’t have A very good life because the Europeans we're racist about them and only I can imagine how it would feel to be the Chinese in the 1860s gold rush.

Horror Writing

We have been working on descriptive writing. Mrs Dellaway shared a spooky video with us to give us inspiration.

Here is my paragraph below.

The Devilish Angel

The last thing I saw was my alarm clock flashing 12:07 before she pushed her long rotting nails through my chest, her other hand muffling my screams. I sat bolt upright, relieved it was only a dream, but as I saw my alarm clock it read 12:06 and I heard my closet door creak open. Soon enough the clock struck 12:07 and the door opened almost completely and standing there was a shadowy figure almost like an angel but with a devilish and heartless smile. She glared at me with cold, snake like eyes putting a shiver down my spine and shadowing me with fear and horror....

Growing Healthy Bodies

Growing Healthy Bodies

This week for topic we have been learning about growing healthy bodies. Today we had a special visit from a Nurse called Ann, she came in and talked about how to have a healthy body and what we should drink and what not to drink.
Do we know what is actually in bottles of fizzy and unhealthy drinks?

  • After You have drank a whole bottle of Coke you have to run a full marathon to burn off the sugar and acid.
  • There is 5 mugs of coffee in v
  • If you drink 3 bottles of coke you're basically drinking 48 teaspoons of sugar

here is a picture of the order of the healthy drinks to the unhealthy drinks

How much sugar in these drinks?

  1. Lift + ( 59 grams of sugar) = 14.7 teaspoons of sugar
  2. V8 Veggie juice ( 27 grams of sugar) = 6.7 teaspoons of sugar
  3. Pump flavoured water ( 17 grams of sugar)= 4.25 teaspoons of sugar
  4. V pure ( 29.2 grams of sugar) = 7.2 teaspoons of sugar
  5. V energy drink ( 53 grams of sugar) = 13.25 teaspoons of sugar
  6. Sprite ( 25 grams of sugar ) = 6.2 teaspoons of sugar
  7. Coke ( 63 grams of sugar) = 16 teaspoons of sugar

Here is a picture of my healthy and unhealthy sheet. My colour is red ( obviously )

Notes on Kaines beeswax presentation

Beeswax notes for Kaine

You can't eat beeswax.
There are hexagons in the honey frames the bees store their honey and
nectar.
Worker bees then come and eat the mixture then vomit it back out which
honey.
You have to take the imperfections out of the wax so there's no dirt in it.
The wax is supposed to be light yellow not dark.
Imperfections are heavy.
If you put beeswax in boiling water it will slowly melt and the smell
of honey will linger in the air.
After you melt beeswax you have to get cheesecloth and use it like a siv,
the reason you have to use cheesecloth is because cheesecloth stops the
imperfections from mixing with the honey.
Manuka honey is a very special type of honey because it has types of
antiseptic in it so people put it on wounds
You have to clean the honey frames before using them again.

Descriptive writing on a character

Here are 3 pieces of writing on characters in a short film about a boy with 1 wing who plays the flute, and 3 crows bully him. Then he meets a girl with one wing and then they fly away together and forget about the crows. The video is below the writing.

Wing: My heart is pounding like its up in my head as I sprint for safety. The misty dark forest surrounds me , as the frightful feeling of loneliness creeping up on me, and then frightening me to death. My heart jumps when I see i’m not alone. The bitter smokey smell that reminds me that the cold blooded wicked crows are near. The forest is spinning and looping as fall to the ground, as I desperately try force my eyes open to see who it is. I shudder as the cold wind whistles through my hair. My wing snaps and I’m left plummeting towards the damp earth. The girl is like a precious rose petal with droplets of loneliness. By Honor

The Crows: The sound of a flute makes my ears bleed. “A FLUTE” I mutter to the rest of my gang. To the sound of the flute I abruptly jerk to the right like a possessed puppet and plummet towards the ground. “THE BOY” I murmur to myself in a deep dark voice. I launch myself over the boy shadowing him with fear as he topples over his feet and onto the damp dirt. He weeps a few tears and stumbles back to his feet. I snatch him by the arm with a tight grip, take his flute and throw him back to the ground. I shuffle away and play the flute, it screeches in my ears like a shriek from a red fox. I squeeze the flute with all my strength until it crumbles into small fragments. By Me (Mia)

The Girl: My wound was in agony as the Crows tore my wing off the only thing to take mind of the pain was to play the flute and listen to the lovely calming sound. Until I felt the warmness cover my wound warming my skin then I sensed (felt) a cool breeze of breath near my cheek i turned around. It was the boy I handed the flute to him he was satisfied that I had it , as he turned to look behind him I saw the fear cross his face I slowly turned to look behind me black figures lurking around in the forest, I turn back he is flapping his 1 wing then I start as we slowly drift higher as the flutter of our wings are pushing us up into the engrossing sunset. T2 W3 Maths - Percentages

This week in maths my group again been practising to calculate percentages of an amount. I found some of the examples easier this week. I need to continue practising with more difficult examples such as 63%. This skill could be used when putting money into a savings account so you can work out how much interest you will make.

Here is another question for you to try and work out comment your answer below:

You put $200 in your savings account which earns 4% interest every year, if you don't take any money out how much money will you have in 3 years?

Descriptive writing on an image

Turning in all directions, I find myself enchanted by fantastic, dazzling lights . . .

The sky looks like an engrossing ombre painting illuminating a country fairground. People are
scattering everywhere in excitement, unsure of which ride to try first. Children drag parents from
one stall to another with relentless determination.

Everyone seems happy at the fair. Laughter can be heard from all generations, young and old.
There is something for everyone, even the big wimps who prefer to just watch and take it all in. Long,
loud screams can be heard high up in the sky as the whirling, twirling rides spin people faster and faster;
higher and higher. Some rides seem to touch the clouds, so high that you have to strain your neck to see.

The smell of meat chokes the air. Hot dogs and burgers are every where I turn. The intense smell of food
mixes with the smell of the fuel from the rides and the numerous trucks that transport the fairground from
town to town. Nothing can quite compare with the wondrous smell of doughnuts. It makes your mouth
water in anticipation and causes your nostrils flare.

I can taste the pink sugary candy floss dissolving in my mouth and floating down my throat.
The crisp salty chips in my mouth are drowning the taste of the sugary candy floss I have just devoured.

I can feel children bumping and bashing into me as they run around playing tag while the parents are
having a conversation. My stomach churns as I spin around and around on the chairoplanes, I think I’m
gonna be SICK!

T2 W2 Maths - Percentages

This week in maths my group has been learning to calculate percentages of an amount. Some percentages are easier to work out than others. In some of the questions I had to solve it in 2 parts because first I had to work out the percentage and then I had to take it off the total amount. This maths skill will be useful when I go shopping in sales because I will be able to work out how much money I can save.
Here is a question for you to try and work out comment your answer below:

Converse shoes originally cost $135, they are now in a 25% of sale. How much will they cost now?

Descriptive writing on an image

In a momentary pause on my morning stroll . . .

I feel the blazing sun blooming through the frosty trees, glistening
straight towards my face while the rest of my body is frozen.
My bitter cold fingers go numb as the wind blows through the frozen
trees and the appearing sun blinds me as it chases the last remnants
of darkness away.

The chilled trees stand frozen like a moment has stopped in time
while the slow rising sun is illuminating the frost which has taken
over what used to be a soccer field. Rays of sunlight peek through
the lonely faded goal posts igniting memories of childhood fun.

Crisp grass crunches under my feet as I slowly pace closer to the
leafless frosty trees. The silence around me is suddenly filled with
cold little birds chirping their morning melody in the chilled icy trees.

When I breath in I can taste the cold thick air as it runs through my
body causing a shiver down my spine. I taste the warmth of sunlight
fall down my throat colliding into the numbing cold air at the
bottom of my chest.

Refreshing crisp smells of approaching snow sprinkled with a
morning dew hang in the air, it is tinged with a hint of wood smoke.
The delicate and fragrant aroma of coffee teases my nostrils inviting
me to seek its source. It is cosy and soothing prompting me to
continue my journey on this typical winter morning.
